We are delighted to announce that our Director of Philosophy and Interdisciplinary Studies, Alexander Carter, has received the prestigious Pilkington Prize for Teaching Excellence.
The award recognises his dedication to teaching adult learners and his innovative approach to interdisciplinary education.
Alex’s teaching covers a broad range of topics, applying philosophy in diverse contexts — an approach that works especially well for adult students from varied backgrounds.
For this reason, he teaches across a range of disciplines—not just philosophy, creativity, and research, but also Coaching, Science Communication, and Creative Writing.
“I’m pleased to say that my courses, like many at the Institute, rank highest for student satisfaction across the entire University. For a number of years, Philosophy courses had 100% satisfaction scores and always receive very positive feedback from students.”
Alex believes it is important to have the high quality of teaching at the Institute recognised.
“I have often remarked that: Good adult education is good education period. To be one of those recognised for the prize, and to join the company of former ICE recipients is simply wonderful.”
“I am also happy that the University prizes (no pun intended) teaching excellence. The Cambridge Centre for Teaching and Learning has certainly done a lot to support my teaching: I completed my Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education through CCTL and I remain a member of the Cambridge Skills Educator Network that is supported by them.”
Alex started working for ICE immediately after completing his PhD. Since then, he has enjoyed near-complete academic freedom.
“I knew I wanted to devote myself to teaching after I taught my very first lesson at the University of Essex. This was a revelation to someone who had previously thought he was a researcher and that was all.”
“I have designed and delivered courses in Philosophy of Humour, Philosophy of Sport, and Creativity Theory; I have received Senior Fellowship accreditation from the Higher Education Academy; I have been involved in University-wide projects related to Technology-Enhanced Learning, Study Skills, and student wellbeing. Throughout, I have worked with some of the most remarkable academics and students—encouraging me and inspiring me to do more and do better.”
You can meet Alex at our upcoming Virtual Undergraduate Open Day on 29 April 2025. Learn about Alex’s courses and undergraduate life at the Institute. Find out more and sign up here.
